Governor Appoints Villacres to Education Advisory Work Group Stafford School Board Chair selected by Governor Warner to study continuing quality in K-12 education. On October 18th, Governor Mark R. Warner appointed Stafford School Board Chairman Tom Villacres to his newly formed advisory workgroup on continuing quality in K-12 education. The workgroup, which includes elected representatives and education advocates from throughout Virginia, has been asked by Warner to look at the continuing, long-term resource requirements needed for a high quality system of K-12 education in the Commonwealth. The workgroup is chaired by Delegate Kristen Amundson of Fairfax and includes one other delegate, two state senators, and representatives from the Virginia Municipal League and the Virginia Education Association. Villacres is the only school board member on the committee and will represent the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA). Villacres is especially qualified to represent Virginia’s school systems on this workgroup because of his eight years of service on a School Board in one of the fastest growing counties in the Commonwealth. As a former teacher, parent, School Board Chairman and member of the VSBA Board of Directors, Villacres brings many perspectives to the study of quality education in the commonwealth. I am honored that Governor Warner has asked me to apply my experience in education at the state level, says Villacres. I look forward to working with my fellow committee members to advocate for Virginia’s children and families by making specific, cost-accountable recommendations that will improve student achievement. Villacres notes that his appointment to this statewide advisory group will enable him to continue to advocate for the needs of public education. There are still prevailing education practices in the commonwealth that receive no state funding, says Villacres. I want to make sure these items are considered in the upcoming biennial budget, because they will benefit our children and the taxpayers of Stafford County.
